For now, let's first explain "reincarnation."
The basis of Jewish thought is that there are two ways to "wipe
out"/"tikkune" a sin: Repentance and Reincarnation.
It is a basic Torah precept that a person has to accomplish all
six hundred and thirteen commandments in their life. However that
task is impossible to achieve, because not in every lifetime do
you get divorced (thats a commandment). And not in every lifetime
are you a Cohen with an existing Temple. If you are a woman
you cant do the commandments that a man has to do. That
means that most women today were men in their former reincarnation.
Its basically impossible to fulfill all six hundred and thirteen
commandments in one lifetime and thus we have to reincarnate a few
times.
The Kabbalistic book, "Gates of Reincarnation" reveals to us a basic understanding of these two levels. Repentance
is from the sphere of "Binah" while reincarnation
is from the sphere of "Chochmah". Reincarnation
is on a higher level because it comes from a higher sphere. This
whole subject of reincarnation comes from a higher sphere than repentance.
